Professor michael fink12/29/2023 ![]() My wife as a girl had watched me in F rench through Pictures on television in her public school classroom. I never lost sight of the inspiration of my Harvard professors, and always, consistently, acknowledged the undying influence of that program in almost every facet of my life. Decades later, another president, John Maeda, praised that slim volume lavishly, a high point in my career! It worked well enough for me to produce and publish Drawing with Words, a text that combined papers/essays written by my students along with quick sketches. ![]() My first “job” was to introduce a composition course - a required class, not an elective, for a so-called “slow section.” Suited me just fine, because my idea was to combine the idea of drawing with the invitation to use words to accompany the details perceived and observed by the incoming disciples. “We are launching a liberal arts department as we widen our curriculum from the studio majors separated from one another to a more general and collective model,” they said as they invited me to join the faculty with my dual degrees of a Yale B.A., a Harvard M.A.T., and a junior year at the Sorbonne. In the summer of 1957, my uncle Herbert Fink was teaching printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and introduced me to its president, John Frazier. ![]() “You speak French better than English” she actually said to me.ĭestiny had something else in store for me. Did a bit of tutoring on the side, after hours, and had a grand time for my initiation into using the skills I had read about and tried to use, up in Cambridge, where I had also played the part of a serving waiter in the French through Pictures experiment sponsored by Miss Gibson. I then accepted the post of a similar assignment in Eastchester, New York, and took an apartment right next door to the junior high building. I treasure as a souvenir the photograph of the graduating class of 1957, with the autographs of my first official students on the reverse side of the rolled up scroll. I became the instructor in French, as well as English, at the junior high school in Belmont, Massachusetts. Which, oddly enough perhaps, invites an almost Hemingway-esque attention to language! The second semester of the M.A.T. I recall a text by Hugh Walpole in which the classic folktales were reduced to a 500-word vocabulary. ![]() During that marvelous first semester I also met Marcel Marceau, the Holocaust survivor pantomimist, who had turned the Jewish orphans into everybody, existentially, and supported the notion that not the number of words but rather the observation of actions clarify one’s lot in life. Richards, who used the experiments of David Weinstein who believed that, upon the birth of the Israel, it was important, even urgent, to teach languages to immigrants from diverse cultures and linguistic roots with immediacy and rapid success. The Smith legacy was willing to make the switch. I sensed that my future lay not upon the landscape of legal rhetoric but instead in the classrooms of the community of students seeking more “poetic” lore. semester at Harvard, and my tuition was paid by the Charles Smith Award for Providence scholars, which was originally offered for Harvard Law School. My connection to HGSE began at the summer prelude in what was then Mount Ida College and then continued as I taught a class in East Providence on French for beginners based on the Language Through Pictures lecture approach that substituted performance for translation.

Renault captur12/28/2023 With the upcoming update, it is expected to retain this position, as its rivals would need to wait for their new generations to catch up. This decision is based on the perceived higher cost of these powertrains, which is deemed unsuitable for the small SUV segment.Īt 4,329 mm (170.4 inches) in length, the second-generation Renault Captur currently holds the title of being the longest vehicle in the B-SUV segment. However, our sources suggest that the inclusion of the mild-hybrid 1.3-liter (12V) and 1.2-liter (48V) powertrains from the larger Austral is unlikely for the Captur. ![]() The existing self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid options with the E-Tech badges are anticipated to continue in the refreshed Captur lineup, as electrification gains popularity among buyers. ![]() While there were initial expectations of the 1.5-liter dCi turbodiesel being discontinued, the fact that it remains available as an option for the Clio suggests that the Captur might continue offering it for a little longer as well. This engine configuration is expected to generate 99 hp (74 kW / 100 PS) when running on LPG and 89 hp (66 kW / 90 PS) on regular petrol. Taking cues from the recently facelifted and mechanically-related Clio, it is likely that the base model of the Captur could be equipped with a carry-over turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine. Other noteworthy contenders in this segment include the new generation Hyundai Kona and the Toyota Yaris Cross. It’s worth noting that the Peugeot 2008 and Skoda Kamiq recently underwent facelifts, while the Ford Puma is anticipated to receive its mid-life update next year, intensifying the spirited competition. This facelift will also ensure that the Captur remains modern and competitive in Europe’s bustling B-SUV segment. This variant would likely feature larger alloy wheels, a more dynamic interior ambiance, and abundant Alpine branding.Ĭombined, these revisions should further distinguish the Renault Captur from its Japanese twin, the Mitsubishi ASX, which made its debut last year. As for the rear end, it remains largely unchanged, with minimal tweaks focused on the lower part of the bumper and the new LED taillight graphics.įurthermore, there are speculations about the introduction of a sportier Esprit Alpine trim to the Captur range. However, it’s possible that Renault may retain them in certain trim levels. The only differences on the profile seem to be the removal of the chrome accents, which have fallen out of fashion lately. Additionally, the SUV will showcase Renault’s new emblem within the updated grille. The Captur follows a similar design approach as the recently facelifted Clio and flagship Rafale, becoming the third production model to feature the revised LED headlights with arrow-shaped DRLs on the bumper. Thanks to the patent drawings, we now know that most of the cosmetic updates are concentrated on the front end, departing from the current model’s bulbous design in favor of a more angular styling. ![]() The current, second generation of the Captur was introduced in 2019, but Renault’s styling language has evolved quite a bit since then. In addition to these enhancements, there have been rumors circulating that the French brand might introduce an extended wheelbase version of the Captur to fill the gap between the popular B-segment model and the larger Austral. Renault is gearing up to refresh the Captur with a series of updates aimed at reinforcing its position in the fiercely competitive small crossover segment in Europe. Minecraft rails stop12/28/2023 ![]() Powering that rail, however, will switch to curve the other way. If a normal rail is placed at a t-intersection between three rails, it will default to one particular side. Intersections are based on the normal rail. Intersections usually combine clever placing of rails with redstone. (Water problem fixed in 1.17, but will slow down the minecart.) For maximum visual impact, you can construct a tunnel out of transparent blocks such as glass or barriers for moving through either of these fluids. If the roller coaster moves through The End, there is no way to protect the rider from the dragon without killing or teleporting it away when it draws near (which requires complex commands), except for a tunnel constructed fully of bedrock, which is impossible to obtain in Survival mode without the use of glitches.īoth water and lava will break any rail they come into contact with. Tunnels allow you to move a rider safely through an obstacle, including natural features of the terrain, such as a mountain, water, or lava, the Nether, or anywhere else that an obstacle would otherwise block the way. (Note that these blocks can be used otherwise, as long as they are supported underneath by any block that does not fall when unsupported.) In Survival mode, consider using common or renewable materials. However, if you are planning to conceal redstone power sources underneath your track, avoid using blocks that follow the laws of gravity, such as sand, concrete powder and gravel. Rails can be placed on any fully-solid opaque block, as well as on top of hoppers, upside-down blocks of stairs, and upside-down slabs. For a more realistic-looking roller coaster, place support beams along the length of the ride and conceal redstone power sources under the track. For example, many builds include a switcher, allowing the minecart to go on a different railway into a station separate from the roller coaster.Ī common way to design a track for a roller coaster involves placing blocks where you want the track to go and then placing the rails and powered rails on top of those blocks. ![]() Stations can include a variety of complex features. When you right-click the button, the powered rail will turn on, allowing the minecart to move forward. Place a button on the uppermost block, facing the powered rail. Once this is done, build a 2-block-high pillar next to the sloping rail. While inactivated, the powered rail will hold the minecart in place against the pull of gravity. Put a minecart on the slope of the inactivated powered rail. Then, place either another piece of powered rail or another plain rail next to it. Next to that block, go down one block (to ground level) and place an inactivated piece of powered rail, so that it appears to slope down from the plain rail. One simple example involves placing a block on the ground where you would like your station to begin and putting a piece of plain rail on top of it. When the button to the right is pressed, the minecart will roll to the station.Ī roller coaster typically starts with a station, which requires a way to start and stop a minecart. Note that, if you choose to follow this model, your riders will not maintain top speed throughout the entirety of the ride.Ī minecart at the end of a roller coaster track. The minecart should be able to make it around the whole track, as long as each hill is not as big as the previous one. This can be achieved in Minecraft as well: simply place powered rails up the first hill (along with your choice of redstone power source) and make the rest of the track from plain rails. Most real-life roller coasters only use powered rails to climb the first hill, using the energy from the descent of that hill to move the car along the rest of the track. Only normal rails can guarantee the success of a turn. Powered activator rails will dismount the player upon passing over one. This creates opportunities for the player to utilize other redstone-powered blocks in their build. ![]() Detector rails can also be used to power 1-3 powered rails when a player is riding the coaster, with the added bonus of sending a redstone signal under or next to the block it's placed on. A single redstone torch or lever will activate 8 connected powered rails in each direction in addition to the rail immediately adjacent to or above it, thus powering up to 17 rails on a track when positioned in the center of a given section. These redstone power sources can be placed on a block adjacent to or hidden underneath the block that the powered rail is placed on. To maintain top speed throughout your ride, all straight sections of a roller coaster should consist of powered rails activated by means of redstone torches or levers. 2.1.6 Kill, teleport, or freeze nearby entities. Macaroni joes12/28/2023 ![]() Trader Joe’s Mac & Cheese Bites are a bit too rich for our taste. ![]() We just feel like we should warn you to be careful with these. A serving also has 430 mg of sodium, which doesn’t sound all that bad until you decide to eat two or three servings at a time. Now, if you decide to eat a whole box at once, you’re getting dangerously close to 700 calories, so keep that in mind when you’re deciding on a reasonable portion. One serving of these is three mac and cheese bites, and that serving contains 210 calories (110 from fat). Oh, and in case you’re curious, the macaroni comes in the traditional elbow shape. We almost wished for a more subtle breading here, because it’s pretty much all we could taste. The cheddar and mozzarella is quite a good combo, but it’s completely overpowered by the pastry flavor. The centers are obviously filled with macaroni, as well as a gooey, stretchy cheese sauce. It’s not easy to eat more than a couple of these at a time because of that richness. The sweet flavor is great, but it’s incredibly rich - almost too rich. We were expecting something a bit more savory. The breading here actually has a sweet, pastry-like taste to it, which is something we didn’t expect.
